Team CERSES

CERSES (Centre de Recherche Sens, Ethique et Société, Centre for Research on Meaning, Ethics and Society) is a joint CNRS lab partnered with Paris Descartes University, directed by Edwige RUDE-ANTOINE since 2007.

It was first created as the Centre de Sociologie de l’éthique (CESE) – Ethics Sociology Center- in 1978 by François-André Isambert, Paul Ladrière et Jean-Paul Terrenoire and was affiliated to the "Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales" until 1992. Its director was F.-A. Isambert (1978-1990) then Paul Ladrière(1990-1994).

CERSES was created as a CNRS “house-lab” in 1995 and became a research unit affiliated with the University of Paris Descartes (UMR 8137) in January of 2002. It was directed by Patrick Pharo from 1995 to 1999 and by Simone Bateman from 2000 to 2007.

The team of the Center is composed of researchers, faculty members, post-doctoral fellows and Ph. D. students, from France and other countries, working in various disciplines such as : philosophy, sociology, law, economics, political science, anthropology, linguistic.

It is located in Centre Universitaire des Saints-Pères de l’Université Paris Descartes, 45, rue des Saints-Pères, 75270 Paris cedex 06. The research objectives of this multidisciplinary centre are to analyse the ethical aspects of human and social sciences. These may be moral problems (medical practices, health policies, dependencies, illegal practices, normativity, ethical thinking committees, collective decisions, technological choices), as well as human and social sciences objects (family, ritual, gift, civility, citizenship, inequalities, affairs, sport,…).

Researches focus on moral concepts and feelings (autonomy, consent, obligation, vulnerability, justice, sanction, consideration, shame, fear…) and concepts belonging to ethical evaluation (responsibility, decision, deliberation, judgment, recognition, justice and equity, risk and sustainable development…). Theoretical and empirical problems in the domain of ethics are studied.
