In December 2009, France issued a loan to fund the "Investments in the Future" programme (Investissement d’Avenir) with a €35bn commitment to sustain innovation and economic development, out of which €22 Bn are devoted to support research and higher education.
The ‘laboratoire d’excellence’ program (labex, laboratory of excellence) is one of the tools created within the Investments in the Future initiative and aiming at supporting large collaborative research projects associating partner teams with strong scientific credentials. Two calls of proposals have been successively launched resulting in the selection of 170 projects identified as "Laboratories of Excellence". The objectives of these labex calls are to:
- to improve the international visibility of French research,
- to guaranty the excellence of the university training by, among other actions, a strong implication in postgraduate programmes,
- to integrate and reinforce the local and international strategies of their host institutions.
The Who am I? project has been proposed by the PRES Sorbonne Paris Cité and was one of the 71 projects selected in the second call for proposals.
